Wearable art – Kindah Khalidy

Kindah Khalidy (what a great name) is a young artist and textile designer based in Northern California, she creates limited edition clothing and accessories alongside paintings and sculptures. Everything Kindah creates is absolutely a piece of artwork, her eye for colour, form and composition is exquisite, and yet all totally wearable and highly covetable. Taking inspiration from sweet shops (good idea) and pushing boundaries, “My designs are even a little bit out of my own comfort zone. My favorite reaction is when people scream and say ‘Whoa! What is that?’” (via Of a Kind) makes for some seriously sweet and exciting designs.

Kindah Khalidy pieces are available through her website and selected stockists, some pieces are completely hand painted and one of a kind, while others are limited print runs on silk, cotton and wool/silk blends. I never thought I’d feature a mumu but I have, so wow. So much cool stuff, I think that fold over clutch would have to be my favourite. Prices range from  $38 for a clutch, $120 for a hand painted top to $285 for a mu mu.

There is also a little DIY post here about trying your hand at fabric painting yourself.

Sharing some festive bling

Lightswitch decals

I’ve developed some packs of smaller sized crystal decals perfect for putting in odd corners, on laptops, or (like I do) sticking behind boring, old, light switches. Each pack of crystals includes one pink, purple and blue as well as instructions for applying. Just like the larger decals, these are matt, fabric stickers which can be removed and re-stuck with no damage to walls. As it is the season, all orders over $45 NZD will include a free pack of crystal decals – consider it an early stocking filler!

If you’d help me spread the Christmas cheer, that would be awesome too.

(They will eventually be available to purchase individually. Like on Facebook if you’d like to be told when crystal is officially being dealt.)

Devon Smith

It’s no secret that Devon Smith is my friend, in fact, it’s like the opposite of a secret. She’s so super cool I’m pretty sure she has people clamoring to be associated with her, and I am (just saying).

Over the last couple of months Devon has released more exquisite, limited edition prints as well as some totally awesome new products (not to mention zines, stickers, patterns). I love how Devon’s work just seems to keep getting darker while retaining her signature delicate and feminine style. It’s perfection.

I need those pillowcases (produced by the brilliant Stay Home Club).

Also, temporary tattoos!

From top: North & South pillowcases from Stay Home Club $50 USD, ‘Double or Nothing’ Limited Edition (50) Giclee Print $36 USD, Temporary Tattoo Set $12 USD,  ’North’ Limited Edition (50) Giclee Print $20 USD, ‘Crenelle’ Limited Edition (50) Giclee Print $20 USD

Check out Devon’s shop here, her beautiful blog (with regular sketchbook updates) here and facebook here.

This brilliant interview with her over on the wocolate blog is totally worth a read too!

Argh! Zombie Cats!

I’m very proud to announce the release of the Zombie Cats 2013 Calendar and accompanying prints. Basically, it’s like your ever popular kitten calendar but with an undead and slightly decomposed twist.

Each month is a fine art reproduction of an original illustration, set upon a sweet pastel background printed on to fine art paper at a very convenient A5 size. Each calendar comes with a handmade pine stand to display.

This year, as the very first Evie Kemp calendar, they are available exclusively online and can be posted anywhere on planet earth. The perfect gift for zombie cat lovers, or a cat lover, or a zombie lover (?). There is also a range of prints for big zombie cat action.

WALL

Now available to buy online here and from my stockists

I have been wanting to upload this post for what seems like forever, I couldn’t wait any longer so I here it is!

I’ve been working away on a new line of wall decals, bridging the gap between traditional art, street art and my beloved, wallpaper. These designs have been created with the medium in mind, incorporating striking motifs, graphic line and awesome colours (oh and cats of course) that look mint on their own or grouped together.

SOME INFORMATION:

Experimenting and trialing with different materials, the entire range is printed on to super cool adhesive ‘fabric’ - a fine, polyester with a light weave which means they apply seamlessly appearing as a mural or wall paper. Because they are completely matte (unlike shiny vinyl) they don’t reflect light and actually look like part of the wall. If walls aren’t your thing they can also be stuck on glass, the fridge, doors, coffee table, your laptop…running out of creative ideas here.

Like my prints, they are long-lasting and printed with archival quality inks so they won’t fade, wrinkle, peel, fall off the wall or take parts of the wall with them. They can be stuck on almost any indoor surface – but avoid applying to walls that have been freshly painted within the last month. They can be easily peeled off and reapplied anywhere you like. Guaranteed safe for use in homes with even the meanest landlords. Worth the effort for even the most fickle interior designer.

Shop Auckland: Mixt

Hey Auckland!

I’m really happy to announce that as of today my prints and cards are being stocked in the gorgeous Mixt store in Kingsland. They have the range of sizes, framed options and really good selection of everything. So if you’re one of those people who likes to go have a real life look, or hand over real paper money for things – now you can. I’ve been a long time fan of Mixt, they have one of the city’s most amazing selection of lampshades as well as an ever changing selection of retro and mid-century furniture, and of course designer homewares and gifts. It’s one of those shops you walk in to and get instantly inspired.  I love stores that share my love of colour and individuality.

So, next time you’ve got a bit of spare time you should pop over for a look, Kingsland is one of my favourite places to hang out scouring the vintage furniture shops, eating pies at the fridge, drinking milkshakes at Shakey Isles, munching magic slice at Crave, jogging round Eden Park… (ok last one not true but it was all sounding a bit too gluttonous).

P.S. If you’re interested in snapping up some amazing furniture you really need to follow the Mixt facebook page, they post photos of new stock (arriving weekly) and it moves fast, some barely making it to the shop floor.

P.P.S Those Isaac Katzoff glassforms amazing.

General Exclamations

Update! General Exclamations are now available online and in store.

I suck at sentiments so it seemed like a totally obvious step to branch in to greeting cards…

Sometimes “Congratulations”, “Happy Birthday” and “Thank You” just don’t cover it, but furry faces and totally generalised, over-enthusiastic exclamations do.

Woah, Sweet, Ooh, Yay and Yuss cover all manner of greetings, expressed by an assortment of suitiably enthusiastic cats and dogs. Each design features an original Evie Kemp illustration, pretty colours, an awesome word and enough unspecific meaning to appeal to even the most reluctant cardgiver.  For that one day a year there is also a ‘Happy Birthday or whatever’ card.

Currently these cards are exclusive to stockists (get in touch: me@eviekemp.com if you’d like to become one) but should be online soon. If you’d like to know when they come online, please sign up to the newsletter here.
